Between Structures (2024) is a composition for solo percussion and electronics, crafted to disorient temporal perception and explore psychoacoustic phenomena. With a variable form spanning approximately 25 minutes, the piece incorporates electronic elements to replicate and disorientate the listener's experience. Focused on creating a sense of disorientation and fluidity, Between Structures invites listeners on a journey through shifting temporal and spatial dimensions, offering a captivating exploration of sound and consciousness.

This work was first performed at the Series 3x1 at Woolloongabba Substation, Brisbane on July 9th of 2023. Furthermore, this work was developed into a formally notated composition, and recorded by the composer in November of 2023 at Poverty Castles (Samuel Pankhurst) studios, Brisbane, funded by CARI, and released on Los Angeles based experimental label Populist July 14th, 2024.

Research Statement

Research Background: Between Structures is a focused exploration of the present moment, emphasising the immediacy of action and practice in musical performance. Inspired by Sara Ahmed's interpretation of Audre Lorde's intersectional advocacy, the title reflects the delicate interplay of sonic materiality, materialism, and engagement with liminal spaces. Rooted in a multiform aesthetic, Between Structures challenges oppressive frameworks, advocating for intersectionality and reimagining percussion as a complex, fragmented practice. Research Contribution: The project unfolded in three stages: first, the creation of material and form; second, the performance and recording of acoustic elements; and finally, the notation of a score. This sequence allowed me to prioritize timbre and possibility over conventional notation, fostering a reciprocal listening practice. While this approach may disrupt traditional composer-performer hierarchies, I remain aware of my role in perpetuating Western art music norms. This awareness has driven me to question whether my actions genuinely challenge conventional forms or inadvertently reinforce them. Consequently, I aimed to let go of strict form in Between Structures, shifting my focus to practice, action, and listening. Research Significance: Between Structures holds the potential to disrupt and reimagine the landscape of musical composition and performance, particularly for percussion and electronics. Through minimalist instrumentation and a process-based methodology, it explores states of consciousness and agency, offering transformative experiences for both listeners and performers. The work was reviewed positively by music critic Peter Margasak after its release by Populist Records.
