Research Statement

RESEARCH BACKGROUND: This film was created by Peter Hegedus after being invited by the Museum of Brisbane to come up with a film narrative about the Brisbane river that celebrates its environment as well as highlights its trajectory from its origin all the way to the point where it meets the ocean. Peter's focus and interest as a filmmaker has been exploring the lives of ordinary people and their environment so this film was a great opportunity to experiment with these themes again but this time in a uniquely different way. RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION: This film is unique in that it traverses the life of the river both physically as well as emotionally as it is intertwined with the people who live and exist around it. What distinguishes this film from all the others is that is primarily providing an emotional experience for the viewer without any words using evocative music to demonstrate the life of the river. At one point we see a man fishing but in the next we see a group of seniors kayaking and in a moment later we are at South Bank watching young people have fun at the beach. RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE: As part of the Museum of Brisbane's exhibition focusing on the river this film has been seen by over 200,000 people (January 2015). There are two versions for this film - a 10 min and a 1 minute version. The latter has been used for publicity purposes and can also be found on the internet. The film is now being distributed by the Museum of Brisbane which stipulates wider distribution and exposure.
