Research Statement

RESEARCH BACKGROUND This series of short documentaries created and directed by Peter Hegedus were commissioned by Big Stories Small Towns Co who have been collaborating with local filmmakers in various Australian States to explore regional towns in an effort to reflect on the lives and issues of the community and those individuals who live there. These 8 documentaries explore the notion of community and the impact globalisation and various other pressing issues on the local community. Peter's background in documentary with a particular focus on social justice shine through these documentaries. RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION Beaudesert is a town 50 minutes from Brisbane and is a unique place in Queensland. By exploring the lives of the individuals who live there and tackling some of the more significant issues, audiences around the world are able to gain an insight into how community exists and flourishes in the heart of Queensland Australia. What distinguishes these documentaries from the mainstream films made about Beaudesert is that the approach taken by the filmmaker Peter Hegedus is personal and intimate taking the viewer beyond the superficial providing unique perspective on the notion of community and more importantly on the future of regional Australia. RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE All the 8 films totaling 60 minutes of material have been uploaded and can be featured on the BIG STORY website. This site has received over 200,000 views. Through festival and other distribution partners Big Stories film has reached over 1 million people since the project launched in 2009. . Relying on significant marketing support to drive online viewers to the site The Big Stories Small Towns Co headed by producers Anna Grieve and Martin Potter has been working extensively to take the project idea internationally and has now commissioned filmmakers in the Asia Pacific create stories in regional areas in Asia. Also note that these 8 films have been screened locally in Beaudesert to a crowd.
