Research Statement
Project Background:
The composition was commissioned by the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art for their international exhibition “European Masterpieces from the MET”. The music was intended to synchronize animated details from digital renderings of selected paintings, and variations in the music were to be triggered by proximity sensors for visitors’ interaction.
The composition fits within the established practice of sonic installation, furthermore it was fit to visual specifications for animation and audience interaction, requiring a specific approach for a balanced modularity and continuity over the duration of the exhibit. The music was created to blend aspects of period music and modern styles.
Project Contribution:
The team coordinator and producer resourced a virtuosa viola da gamba performer from Spain, and Baroque guitar player, flute, Spanish guitar, digitally modeled a Vihuela, and electronics from Brisbane, combining colours and patterns from the Baroque and adding harmonic and timbrical nuances from contemporary practice aimed at a broad audience over a prolonged and sustained duration and period.
Project Significance and evidence of quality:
The interactive music composition was a rotund success, engaging people for some 191,165 visits over the 12 Jun 2021 – 17 Oct 2021 period.
