Debut album by Rebecca Lloyd-Jones, HOME (HJEM / HJEMME) is a creative exploration of place, exploring the relationships between performer, interpreter, and composer through the art of percussion.

"HOME (HJEM/HJEMME)" is a creative journey exploring the nexus of place and artistic identity. Centered on the quest for musical belonging, it merges classical training with experimental exploration, crafting unique sonic landscapes and reflections on the vulnerability of creative practice. Inspired by Norwegian adverbs 'hjem' and 'hjemme'—representing movement towards home and a sense of being at home—the project comprises compositions by esteemed composers (Part A: 'HJEM') and original tracks by the artist (Part B: 'HJEMME'). Through this interdisciplinary exploration, HOME (HJEM/HJEMME) explores themes of place, identity, and creative practice, intertwining music composition with reflection and research.

Research Statement

Background: HOME (HJEM/HJEMME) is a creative exploration of place and self, interrogating the relationships between performer, interpreter, and composer. Drawing inspiration from the quest for community and belonging, this work emerges as a synthesis of classical training and experimental inquiry, slipping between formal categories and genres, disrupting the conventional structures of Western Art Music. HOME (HJEM/HJEMME) emerges from speculative methodologies of creative practice, intersecting with scholarly discourse on Artistic Research in Music, critical gender studies, and contemporary performance practices. The compositions within HOME (HJEM/HJEMME) initially originated from the artist's creative portfolio accompanying their Master of Music Research Dissertation, showcasing the fusion of scholarly inquiry with artistic practice. However, this creative work saw further growth and opportunity with the support of the independent label Made Now Music, evolving into the cohesive output HOME (HJEM/HJEMME). Contribution: Within this work, I explore the concept of place, particularly the notions of home and belonging, and its intersection with artistic identity; therefore, HJEM/HJEMME is a creative platform for expression and experimentation, fostering critical thinking and reflection on my creative processes. By documenting the journey and outcomes of this project, I contribute to the scholarly discourse of interdisciplinary creative practices. The title HJEM/HJEMME draws inspiration from the Norwegian language, encapsulating the multifaceted nature of the adverb home and its association with places one goes to, exists within, or inhabits. Hjem in Norwegian is an adverb, typically translating to home or homeward in English. It implies movement or direction towards one's place of residence or origin. Hjemme is also an adverb in Norwegian, translating to being at home or one's home, denoting a location or state of being within one's residence or familiar environment. HJEM/HJEMME is conceptually and musically divided into two parts: Part A, HJEM, symbolizes my journey homeward, featuring compositions by esteemed composers Michael Finnissy, Erik Griswold, Warren Burt, and Anthony Pertout. In contrast, Part B, HJEMME, showcases a collection of nine tracks I have composed, performed, and recorded, evoking a sense of familiarity and a desire for peace within my personalized practice. Based on the following Research objectives, HJEM/HJEMME aims to explore several key areas: - Exploration of Place and Identity: The project aims to explore the concept of place, particularly the notions of home and belonging, and how these concepts intersect with my artistic identity as a musician, creator, and performer. - Creative Expression and Experimentation: HJEM/HJEMME serves as a platform for me to express myself creatively and experiment with new sonic landscapes, techniques, and approaches to music composition and production. Additionally, it encourages experimentation, critical thinking, and reflection on my creative processes, leading to the development of new approaches to discourse, music composition, and performance. - Documentation and Reflection: The project involves documenting the creative process, including compositions, performances, and recordings, and reflecting on my journey, outcomes, and discoveries of the creative process. - Integration of Practice and Research: By adopting a practice-based research approach, HJEM/HJEMME aims to integrate artistic practice with research methodologies, contributing to the scholarly discourse of interdisciplinary creative practices. Significance: HOME (HJEM/HJEMME) premiered on December 16th, 2017, at Jugglers Artspace, Fortitude Valley, hosted by the independent label Made Now Music. At this event, I performed and spoke about my work, sold albums and merchandise, and connected with the Made Now Music community. As my debut album, this work, supported by the platform Made Now Music provides, gave me a broader platform and community to showcase and share my music.
