A feature documentary that looks at the impact of American political and cultural power over the world from the perspective of Australian Hungarian filmmaker Peter Hegedus.
The concept for the feature documentary My America emerged from the experience of growing global anti American sentiment following 9/11. The universal questions surrounding cultural identity in the face of US hegemony have compelled authors like Ziauddin Sardar (Why Do People Hate America 2003) and filmmakers such as Michael Moore (Fahrenheit 9/11 2004) to express their own views about the world's super power and the rest of the world's relationship with it.

Research Statement
BACKGROUND: The concept for the feature documentary My America emerged from the experience of growing global anti American sentiment following 9/11.
CONTRIBUTION: Unlike some of the books and films that explore these issues from a highly political perspective, My America, an autobiographical documentary, tackles it personally, echoing the confusion, resentment but also affection so many people around the world feel about the US. Furthermore, by exploring this subject matter in an idiosyncratic narrative form, including experimental cut out animation, this documentary pushes the boundaries of the broadcast form and explores new ways of bringing together visual art and more academic forms of discourse.
SIGNIFICANCE: Richard Kuipers in his review in Variety called the film a 'stimulating chronicle' (2011) while SBS' Peter Galvin said the film is 'heartfelt…beautifully produced' (2011). Produced with a budget of 1.8 million dollars, the film was shot over three years in eight nations. After its completion My America has been broadcast over six European TV stations and also broadcast on SBS (January 2014). The film screened in numerous inter/national festivals including being in competition at the Sydney Film Festival. I accompanied My America on a screening/speaking University tour in the US. It is currently distributed by prestigious US, European and Australian distributors and is available on DVD.
