Public Figure for piano and percussion was composed for players of the new music ensemble Kupka’s Piano in 2020. Presented by the Brisbane Music Festival, this work was created within the parameters of online performance due to the restrictions of Covid-19. Inspiration for the work was in response to the inundation of news and social media as caused by the pandemic, a central question being: How can the sounds of visual overstimulation be represented through music?

Research Statement

Background Public Figure for piano and percussion was composed for players of the new music ensemble Kupka’s Piano in 2020. Contribution Public Figure explored new ways of creating music for online presentation. It was a part of a collection of new works for piano and percussion, each of which were commissioned with online/video performance as a parameter of composition. It explored thematic concepts around these same parameters: both the inspiration for the work and the method of performance influenced the sonic material. Research Significance It was presented by the 2020 Brisbane Music Festival, led by Artistic Director Alex Raineri, and commissioned by new music ensemble Kupka’s Piano. It was publicly premiered on 21 November 2020. Media coverage of the work included a feature in the Limelight Magazine World Premiere column (October 2020) and a review by the Creative Issue (November 2020). Jodie Rottle is represented by the Australian Music Centre, and this work is a part of her public profile through this publishing avenue.
