Research Statement
Research Background
Music in the 21st Century is radically pluralistic, and many innovators are obliged to critically consider their own traditions and styles, and relationships to other varieties of music making. This is true for classical music as well as electronic music. Thomas Green’s composition explores varied musical streams. In his long-term project contesting ossified notions and exclusivity in classical and art music, each of Green’s work uses a variety of methods to encourage audiences and peers to new ways of considering traditional boundaries. In Shugorei, this occurs overtly.
Research Contribution
Shugorei is an album produced featuring percussionist Nozomi Omote, so that classical percussion instruments are teamed with an array of electronic instruments, challenging boundaries. An unusually wide palette of timbres is drawn, from an array of bricolage, traditional percussion and electronic instruments, to furnish a project which seamlessly merges stylistic traits of electronica and contemporary art music, resulting in a novel response to questions about stylistic boundaries and identities in art music.
Research Significance
This is an extension of the work begun in Thomas Green’s PhD studies, and a deliberate step in the progression of his work along this trajectory. Shugorei (the album) was launched at a live concert: Dots + Loops Vibrations on the 27th of March 2021 in Newstead, Brisbane. The album is available via all major streaming platforms, and as a physical release (CDs). The content of the album has been performed on numerous occasions throughout Brisbane since then, including the Concrete Jungle Festival at the Princess Theatre in November 2021, Jungle Love Festival, Brisbane Festival, and Port Fairy Spring Music Festival (Victoria) in 2022.
