Research Statement
Research Background:
Thomas Green’s composition explores varied musical streams. In his long-term project to contest the ossified branding and exclusivity of classical and art music, each of Green’s work uses a variety of methods to encourage audiences and peers to new ways of considering classical boundaries. Thomas Green was commissioned by ANAM to create a work specifically for violinist Claire Weatherhead, who premiered the work and presented it at the ANAM Set in 2022.
Research Contribution:
In "So, I Am Shouting," rhythmic figures were, to an unusual extent, left to the interpretation of its performer. Thus, the work was intended to draw embodiment into focus – a musical facet whose elevation might interrogate entrenched methodologies. Writing for a specific person means preparing music while evaluating an attribute space: that person and their relationship with their instrument, as well as the instrument’s idiosyncrasies, its performance environment and its audience. In this way the music exists only in relation to its people and environment. Although Western musical notation—perhaps its most defining feature—provides the facility for music to be abstracted (e.g. from temporality), Green’s music interrogates this and invites reemphasis on actualisation and music occurring “in the world.”
Research Significance:
This work was commissioned by Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) for the renowned ANAM Set, a program funded by Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) which commissioned 67 composers for 67 of their students, to encourage bonds between composers and performers. Thomas Green paired with violinist, Claire Weatherhead. It was premiered at Abbotsford Convent (Melbourne) on the 26th of October in 2021, and featured at the ANAM Set Festival on the 14th of May in 2022. On the same day at a separate event, it was recorded in front of a live audience for public broadcast (on air and digital) by The Music Show (ABC Radio National).
