Research Statement
(re) thinking | (un)doing | mastery is a multiform text combining a creative and discursive exploration of performance practice concerning percussion and gender. Background: Created for the Australian publication ADSR Zine, this work offers an interdisciplinary, multisensory experience, departing from and rupturing the traditional concept of the academic text. Woven throughout the more formal and academic prose found in (re) thinking | (un)doing | mastery is music—pages of reflections and external links to my website, Sonic Vignettes. Created to provide readers with a multidimensional encounter, (re) thinking | (un)doing | mastery's chosen format challenges and invites readers to explore additional audio and visual content curated by myself alongside critical theory, extending the narrative beyond the confines of static, written academic texts. Contribution: (re) thinking | (un)doing | mastery, challenges conventional norms of textual presentation, offering a pioneering approach to disseminating scholarly content. By seamlessly integrating prose, reflection, and multimedia elements, I explore unconventional forms of communication, transcending the confines of traditional institutions and the hierarchy of scholarly outputs. Inspired by Julietta Singh's pioneering work Unthinking Mastery, I meld critical theory, original musical composition, and improvisation with prose and self-reflexive methodologies within an online framework centered on my concepts of intimacy, tactility, and vulnerability in creative practice. With a focus on unraveling the constructs of virtuosity in Western Art Music and its impact on gender norms and societal structures, I established Sonic Vignettes as a virtual space linked throughout the text, serving as an immersive listening experience, offering a guided journey through my contemplations on the complexities of gender and virtuosity as a music practitioner. Significance: By juxtaposing sonic material with academic formality, I am attempting to disrupt the norms of scholarly discourse, advocating for vulnerability in reading and listening. The significance of this research lies in its capacity to expand the horizons of academic communication by taking a multidimensional approach to textual expression and exploring new ways for researchers to connect with their audience.
