Background
“it has no end” was commissioned by the Brisbane music Festival for Perth-based percussionist Thea Rossen. The thematic content of the work explores the sounds of round objects and a circular form. These concepts relate to the inspiration of the work, which was the evolution of relationships and the cyclical nature of renewal through friendship. The work is set in five short movements and is for a large collection of everyday objects.
Contribution
“it has no end” explores the sounds of everyday objects, particularly that of round, circular, or spherical objects. Many of the musical elements of the piece were guided or directed by the visual gesture of playing round objects; thus, the compositional method was multi-sensory. This exploration of technique steps outside of conventional music composition to include the everyday, the nonhuman, and that which is gestural. It was composed for a trained percussionist, but the text-based score is not limited to a trained musician. This work explores how musical compositions may become accessible for those who do not have extensive musical training but are professional performers, such as performance artists or physical performers.
