Research Statement
BACKGROUND: 8 Hits is the result of a year long Project Fellowship (2014) from the Australia Council for the Arts which involved commissioning, developing, performing and recording 8 new works for solo percussion by 8 leading Australian composers. Intended as a chance to document Tomlinson's contribution to the development of percussion in Australian music, the 8 composers are all close collaborators, from a single generation, and with varying relationships to Tomlinson. The project seeks to examine the unique musical approaches embedded in her technical and musical approach to sound. CONTRIBUTION: Tomlinson's performative work in 8 Hits incorporates composition, interpretation, improvisation, and gesture, with each musical setting bringing to the fore different elements of her artistic interests. 8 Hits contributed eight new works to the percussion repertoire. She gave the world premiere of the following works; Peter Knight - Make Them Dance; Kate Neal - Self Accusation; Vanessa Tomlinson - Still and Moving Paper; Cat Hope - Broken Approach; Erik Griswold - Stars of Ours; Natasha Anderson - The Snakes are Loose; Rosemary Joy - Fratrem; and Lindsay Vickery - The Semantics of Redaction. SIGNIFICANCE: The works were all premiered live on ABC Classic FM, opening their Australian Music Month on November 1st, 2014, and presented by Julian Day. The 1 hour, 45 minute live show incorporated premiere performances, interviews with the performer and discussions with 4 of the composers. 8 Hits has resulted in 8 new solo percussion pieces, fully documented via video and audio recordings, incorporating the performance practice developed over 12 months. This show has toured to Melbourne Recital Centre, Fullarton New Music Festival (CA), McGill University (Canada) among others.Confidential / Culturally sensitive
