Research Statement

Research Background This research consists of a commercially released CD Album surveying Romances by Russian composers Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Sergei Rachmaninov, produced by prominent Australian performing artists and long-time collaborators Andrew Goodwin (tenor) and Daniel de Borah (piano). The recording was published by ABC Classic, and builds on the duo’s previous publications of Lieder by Robert Schumann and Vocal Ensemble works by Schumann and Brahms. Research Contribution As a long-standing duo of Australian artists both of whom completed their undergraduate studies at the St Petersburg State Conservatory N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov, Mr Goodwin and Mr de Borah are uniquely placed to contribute a distinctive and fresh perspective to existing sources in this music. Russian classical music has been a central focus of their studies in Russia and subsequent profiles as practising musicians in Europe and Australia. The Russian Romance genre has been core to their extensive collaborative activities together going back to 2006, during which period Mr Goodwin was also the first foreigner invited to sing the role of Lensky in the Bolshoi Opera’s production of Tchaikovsky’s Evgeny Onegin (Moscow). This research represents a culmination of the pair’s combined immersion and study of this repertoire and related works, informed by their singular experiences as Australian musicians steeped in the musical culture of Russia. Research Significance The research was published online by ABC Classic and disseminated worldwide via multiple streaming sites including Apple Music, Spotify and YouTube. The album received widespread airplay in Australia on ABC Radio where it was also featured as Album of the Week. Music from the album feature on Apple Music’s “New Music Daily” playlist, and the publication received a 5-star review in Limelight Magazine.
