Commission, workshopping and direction of the Riverside Guitar Ensemble's world premiere performance of A PIece of Cake by distinguished Australian composer Gerard Brophy at Adelaide Guitar Festival. This work is a significant new addition to the very small existing body of repertoire for  guitar ensemble, and its performances both in Brisbane and Adelaide were enjoyed by large and appreciative audiences.

Research Statement

This work seeks to expand the existing (very small) body of concert repertoire for large guitar ensemble through the commissioning of a new work from Australian composer Gerard Brophy. Large guitar ensembles have traditionally consisted of school groups or amateur ensembles, and therefore the music written (or arranged) for these beginner-intermediate players in such ensembles has by necessity usually been quite simple (and often somewhat derivative). There are now a number of high-level guitar ensembles emerging around the world, of which Riverside Ensemble (based at Griffith University) is a very strong example. In creating, curating and directing programmes for Riverside Ensemble, I am working together with composers, arrangers and performers to create a new body of guitar ensemble repertoire. This work, A Piece of Cake, was a commission from distinguished Australian composer Gerard Brophy for Riverside Guitar Ensemble. I directed rehearsals and workshopped the piece with the composer prior to its final editing and subsequent world premiere performances at Griffith University and Adelaide Guitar Festival (2022). The work was performed in Her Majesty’s Theatre in a major feature concert of the Adelaide Guitar Festival and reviewed in The Adelaide Advertiser. This work represents a major new contribution to the guitar ensemble repertoire
