Research Statement
Background
"Feel Good Hit of the Summer" was an exhibition that consisted of 15 new photo-media and text artworks presented at Jan Murphy Gallery in Brisbane. The artworks continued my research into the narratives of personal experience told through the combination of text and image. Personal reflections are written, then hand cut into photographs, that combine time, place and space designed to represent the various structures used to interpret a life. The exhibition also consisted of cyanotypes with resurrected letters that formed portraits of people posing nude for the camera.
Contribution
The series of works continued my research into disrupting the traditional descriptive and representational modes of text and image. The combination of personal stories that are told through a non-related photographs conflate multiple narratives into a single image. Through the creation of narrative worlds, such as the metalepsis the artworks highlight the role of narratives in the formation of meaning to question the nature of the photograph in representing experience.
Significance
This solo exhibition was held at a significant commercial gallery in inner-city Brisbane. Three works were exhibited at Sydney Contemporary and sold to private collectors.
